How can I afford a professional quality instrument for college?
I just started college thinking I could get by with my intermediate clarinet for a while, and everyone else here seems to have the Buffet R13. I don't want to spread myself too thin by getting a job, and my parents said if I could find a rent-to-own method they would do it. As far as I know those don't exist for professional instruments but I am hoping I am wrong. I am open to just about any suggestions.
Assuming that you're a music performance major and therefor need professional quality equipment for your profession: (general music and music ed people can get by with much less expense)
People in other professions pay way more than we musicians for their tools. Ask any good auto mechanic how much he has invested in his shop. Imagine what a dentist pays for all of that gear in his clinic. Even a plumber has more invested in his gear than we musicians tend to and he needs a work truck too.
Sure, $5K sounds like a lot of money. But, is it really a lot when you consider it's what we make our living from? This, of course, assuming you plan to make your living from it.
Don't buy a professional instrument yet. At least not unless you've got a professional gig to pay for it with already. If you don't have some professional work, get some. If you're planning orchestral work then keep in mind that a single R-13 isn't going to cut it, you need a pair in Bb and A.
At the start of your junior year, when you're sure you're going to make this your profession and that you're going to make it through that degree; then buy your professionals. A pair of Bb and A that you've tried and that suit your needs. Probably the R-13 but try several.
"Pay for it how" you ask? A loan. Just like most other professionals buy their expensive gear. It's very likely you can qualify for a federal student loan of large enough amount in your junior year to pay for at least one if not both of these. Yes, your instrument is an allowed educational expense when you're a music major.
An alternative and sooner? Play some music for money and use the money to buy your new instrument. If you can't find any work playing music for money, you might want to reconsider whether you have a need for a "professional" instrument just yet. I'm not being mean - really. It's an absolutely fantastic way to judge when you need to buy this level of perfection. (hint: Dixieland and Klezmer clarinet players can get paid.)
Want to extend the functionality of your "intermediate" model for a while without the cost of an R-13? Start with a keys-off service from a good tech. Then buy it a new professional mouthpiece and ligature. I like the Vandoren mouthpieces for "serious" music and the new Klassik ligature rocks. I like Pomarico mouthpieces for jazz and dixieland. A few hundred and your tweaked instrument will play better than those other student's stock R-13.
Don't get hung up on your gear before it's time to. Check out some articles on what Benny Goodman played for a living. It wasn't an R-13. Pete Fountain didn't get famous on an R-13 either. It's not all about the gear. ☺
